Character
How you show up, grow, and contribute to your community
Character is demonstrated through how students think, act, respond to challenges, and interact with others at school, in their community, and online. Growth in Character happens over time through reflection, responsibility, resilience, and empathy.
A Successful student will leave Coeur d'Alene School District with the...
Skills and dispositions necessary for successful citizenship, including compassion, honesty, responsibility, and community involvement.
What This Looks like for Students
The statements below are written from the student’s point of view (“I can…”) to describe how students demonstrate growth in this competency over time.
Accountable and Responsible
I am responsible for what I think, say, and do. I own up to my actions and think about
how my choices affect others at school, in my community, and online.
I can keep my promises and do things that help me, my friends, and my community in a positive way.

Self-aware and Resilient
I try to understand my thoughts, values, and beliefs. I also think carefully and question my own opinions to see if they make sense.
I'm learning to recognize and understand more emotions, even the really strong and complicated ones. I can think about why I feel a certain way, and how my thoughts, feelings, and actions are connected, and I can accept my emotions without judging myself.
I can push through tough and stressful situations by staying determined and believing in myself. I also know how to speak up for what I need.

Empathetic and Compassionate
I think about how others might react to what I say or do before I share it, and I understand how my actions can affect both me and other people.
I use my understanding of others and my social skills to keep positive relationships with people.
I learn from other people's experience to question or expand my own beliefs. I work to bring my friends together to cooperate and understand each other, and I take action to support and stand up for others.
