Application Process for Sorensen Magnet School
Current Students
Once students are enrolled at Sorensen, they are welcome to return if still living in the CDA School District; no application necessary, only an annual Confirmation of Enrollment. If you moved out of district during the school year, you must reapply to attend.
New Students
There are two consecutive lottery windows throughout the year to ensure we reach our student population capacity and provide a waiting list of students in each grade level.
Applications are not processed on a first-come-first serve basis. At the close of each window the applications are sorted by priority (shown below) and are entered into a random draw.
Window #1 Opens March 1st and runs through April 11th |
Starting March 1st applications will be made available to download online or pick up at the school office for the following school year. This first lottery window will remain open until April 11th at which point the window will close and we will begin the physical lottery draw of the applications we have received. |
Window #2 Opens at the close of Window 1 and runs through August 15th |
We will continue to receive and hold applications after the first lottery draw in March. The second window lottery draw will be held August 15th. More details of this second lottery draw are outlined below. |
How does the lottery draw work?
Window #1:
For students who are new to Sorensen, the first step of the process is the lottery draw for grade level priority. Because the remaining prioritization hinges on grade-level order of the draw, it is important to establish this first. If a lottery draw is necessary, the following order will be used:
Priority Group #1: Applicant’s parent or guardian is employed at Sorensen.
Priority Group #2: Applicant is a sibling of a student (K-4th grade) currently enrolled at Sorensen and resides within the Magnet Priority Zone.
Priority Group #3: The applicant is a sibling of a student (K-4th grade) currently enrolled at Sorensen and resides outside of the Magnet Priority Zone, but within CDA district.
Priority Group #4: The applicant resides within the Magnet Priority Zone and qualifies for free or reduced lunch (up to 35% of total enrollment will receive preference, free and reduced application required).
Priority Group #5: Applicants reside within the Magnet Priority Zone, regardless of income qualifications and including students from Priority Group #4 who were not chosen before the 35% threshold was met (proof of residency with a current utility bill is required).
Priority Group #6: The applicant resides outside of the Magnet Priority Zone, but within the CDA District boundaries, and qualifies for free or reduced lunch. If you live in the CDA school district, but outside of the Magnet Priority Zone, your child is next on the priority list.
Priority Group #7: All other applicants who reside outside of the Magnet Priority Zone, but within the CDA district boundaries.
Students who currently live outside the district boundaries will not be eligible for acceptance during the first window but may be considered in Window #2.
After we have completed Window #1 of the lottery draw, our staff will contact applicants to inform them if their application has been accepted or they will receive a number placement on our waiting list.
Parents / Guardians of accepted students will be required to accept and complete a Registration Packet within one week of notification to guarantee admission.
Window #2:
This lottery window, for each grade level, continues after Window #1 applicants. In the event that a class has filled during the first lottery window, the applications received during the second window will be added to a grade level waiting list. (see more on waiting lists below)
Grade level order of draw will follow the same order as Window #1.
Out-of-district enrollment for siblings of current students will be considered after Priority Group #7 of Window 2 after all other in-district applications have been processed. It could be after the school year starts that out-of-district siblings may be accepted. Out-of-district applicants will not be offered an enrollment opportunity until all in-district applications have been satisfied.
Waiting Lists:
For many reasons throughout the school year, students withdraw. This creates new opportunities for those students on our waiting lists. Waiting lists will be used for the entire school year. Parents / Guardians of accepted students will be required to accept and complete a Registration Packet within one week of notification to guarantee admission.
If you have any questions regarding the application process, please contact our office at 208-664-2822. Our office hours during the school year are Monday through Friday 8 am - 4 pm.
