This week students showed off their spelling skills in a dazzling display of knowledge and preparation at the Coeur d'Alene Public Schools Spelling Bee hosted by Coeur d'Alene High School.

Jeremy Bott, a fifth grader at Hayden Meadows Elementary, won his third spelling bee championship, confidently spelling his championship word, “blatant.” 

Coeur d’Alene Public Schools’ focuses on English fundamentals year-round and the spelling bee is the culmination of that effort. 

Winners and alternates in grades 4-8 will compete in the 23rd Inland Northwest Spelling Bee to be held at North Idaho College’s Schuler Performing Arts Center on Saturday, February 7th at  9 a.m.

Other individual grade winners: 

Maverick McDonough, a third grader at Atlas Elementary School, earned first place after nine rounds of competition with the winning word “concrete.”

Eve Hefler, a fourth grader at Atlas Elementary School, won by correctly spelling “refinery.” 

Hudson Sozzoni, a sixth grader at Woodland spelled “squalor” to win best speller in his grade category. 

Preston Pool, a seventh grader at Canfield Middle School, notched the win after spelling, “concierge” correctly. 

Pierce Taylor, an eighth grader at Woodland Middle School, won his category with the winning word of “medusa.”
