School Bus Standards for Safe Conduct

Riding a school bus is not an undeniable right. Each student is responsible for making the choice to follow the School Transportation Standards for Safe Conduct and have a pleasant ride to/from school or choosing not to with the possibility of losing his/her CDA SD transportation riding privileges.

At the Bus Stop:

  • Students are to arrive at the bus stop 5 minutes before stop time.

  • Wait for the bus in an orderly line, at least 12 feet back from the road or on the sidewalk.

  • Respect the rights and property of others at the bus stop. 

  • If students have to cross the road, wait for the driver's signal and cross 12 feet in front of the bus.

While on the Bus or other School District Transportation:

  • Scan your bus pass when loading and unloading the school bus.

  • Go directly to and remain in an available or assigned seat. Students are to fasten seat belts when available.

  • Remain seated, facing forward, using a quiet voice, and keeping hands to self.  Aisles must not be blocked with feet, personal belongings, etc…

  • Respect the rights and property of others. Students shall not be loud, not use profane, abusive, or vulgar language.

  • Students are responsible for the area in which they sit. Any damage inflicted to the vehicle will be paid for by the students responsible.

  • Throwing, spitting, kicking or shooting items inside the vehicle or out the windows is hazardous and prohibited.

  • Only items that can be held on lap are allowed on the bus without prior arrangements being made with the Transportation Department. Parents will need to make other arrangements to transport large instruments that do not fit on a student’s lap.

  • Eating, drinking or chewing gum are not permitted. (Danger of choking and allergic reactions are present.)

  • Tobacco, vape devices, alcohol, illegal drugs, and use of flame or spark-producing devices, including but not limited to matches, lighters, etc. are prohibited.

  • Animals, hazardous materials, water devices, skate boards, skis, ski poles, baseball bats, or any potentially hazardous items are not allowed. Balls are allowed when completely contained in a backpack the duration of the ride.

  • Keep all body parts inside the vehicle at all times.

  • Cell phones may be used if: use does not distract the driver or other students, the sound is not heard by others, and the content does not violate district policy.

Unloading:

  • Promptly walk away from the bus and if crossing, wait for the driver’s signal.

  • Students will not be allowed to randomly change bus stops or depart the bus at a location different than the pick-up location unless there is prior authorization by transportation. 

 

Penalty: Violation of the above standards of conduct will render pupils immediately liable for temporary or permanent disbarment from riding.

The driver is in charge of the vehicle and student management. The driver has the right to assign seats at any time. Students shall follow the driver's directions promptly.
