Open enrollment and transfers
Parents/guardians may choose the school your child attends, even if the school is outside your attendance zone or school district. This flexibility allows families to consider programs, class size, extracurricular activities, etc. when choosing a school or district.
If you are interested in transferring a child to a school outside your attendance zone or school district, please complete and submit a transfer application for each child using the information below.
Are there requirements to transfer my child to a new school?
Yes! To be accepted into a new school, students must meet certain attendance and behavior requirements. There must also be space available in the school he/she chooses to attend.

Attendance Report
Must be submitted with the transfer form. Failure to do so will result in an automatic denial. Parents will then need to resubmit the transfer with the required documentation. Students currently enrolled with Coeur d'Alene Public Schools are not required to upload documents, as this information can be obtained by the district.

Behavior Report
Must be submitted with the transfer form. Failure to do so will result in an automatic denial. Parents will then need to resubmit the transfer with the required documentation. Students currently enrolled with Coeur d'Alene Public Schools are not required to upload documents, as this information can be obtained by the district.

Space
To transfer into a new school, that school must have enough space (capacity) to accept new students. A transfer student’s acceptance into their school of choice may be denied if the number of students is past capacity. If this happens, the transfer student will be required to return to their home school. Each school's capacity is posted every three months on the district’s website.
In-district students: If your child already attends a Coeur d'Alene District school when you submit your transfer request, you are NOT required to upload attendance and discipline records. The district can obtain this information from Skyward.
Out-of-district students: If your child does not attend the Coeur d'Alene Public Schools (Charter schools in the area are not part of the Coeur d'Alene District), you will need to submit your child's current attendance and discipline records. If you do not upload the requested documents, your transfer will be automatically denied for lack of documents. Parents will need to resubmit their transfer request with the requested documents. Documents may not be emailed to the school or the district office. If your transfer is approved, a request for your child's official records will be sent to your old school.
Other Considerations
Once a student is accepted into their new school of choice, parents/guardians do not need to submit an open enrollment application for the following year. However, if the student does not plan to return to that school after the first year of attendance, parents/guardians must notify the school.
After attending their new school of choice for two years, students are grandfathered into that school until they advance from elementary to middle school, graduate, or are enrolled in college. This grandfathering process does not include siblings. Siblings who wish to enter the transfer school for the first time must fill out a transfer form and be approved to attend.
Students accepted into their preferred elementary or middle school are not automatically accepted into that school’s feeder middle or high school.
Students attending an elementary or middle school inside their attendance zone who do not wish to attend their feeder school must apply to attend their middle or high school of choice; otherwise, they are automatically enrolled in their feeder school.
Students attending an elementary or middle school outside their attendance zone must apply to attend that school’s middle or high school feeder school.
Transferring to a new school could affect a student’s athletic eligibility, which the Idaho High School Activities Association governs.
If a student is accepted to their new school of choice, parents/guardians must provide transportation for their child to the new school or to the bus stop serving the school.
Parents/guardians considering a transfer for their child should carefully review the guidelines and requirements provided by the Idaho Department of Education.
