Project Based Learning

This expeditionary school is exemplified by Project-Based Learning (PBL) expeditions, in a workshop model (using inquiry based learning and thinking strategies) with the world as our classroom. Students take physical and academic journeys using critical thinking, hands-on learning, journaling, observation, exploration, collaborative learning and strategic and scientific methods to truly understand their world. Using the Idaho Core Standards, academic work is rigorous, challenging and purposeful.

Project Cards

Below you will find links to Project Cards of unique and innovative PBL units created by our NExA teachers. These cards provide an overview of the project unit including: driving question, modules, state standards, assessments, final product elements, and authentic audience. If accessing and using these projects, please provide credit when able to the creator of the unit. Please reach out to our teachers with additional questions about the individual project cards.

Student Exhibitions

Northwest Expedition Academy hosts Exhibition Nights quarterly to allow our students an opportunity to present their work to an authentic audience. We invite family, friends, and community members to attend and celebrate the accomplishments of our students' during their PBL unit. In each classroom and gathering space you will be greeted by enthusiastic learners turned content specialists as they walk you through their Driving Question and the research and findings that answered that questions. You will also see a culmination of their work through some sort of hands on project such as a brochure, poster, 3D model, video, infographic, published book, etc. This is truly a celebration and a night full of energy and enthusiasm. We hope to see you at our next Exhibition Night!

Community Expeditions

We'd Love to Learn with You!

Our students do not just learn within the walls of their classroom. In fact, most days you visit NExA you will find that there are empty classrooms because our students are outside, in their community, learning through doing. We regularly walk or bus to local businesses, hiking trails, and organizations to research, observe, learn, and serve.

Do you own or work at a business or organization that would like to host our students for a learning expedition? Please reach out and we can get you in touch with a teacher that could use your expertise!

Do you have knowledge or expertise you would like to share with our students but don't have a location that would allow them to come to you? That's okay! We love hosting community experts as well. Again, please reach out and we will connect you with a teacher who could host you in their classroom for an expert presentation!
