Dear Parents and Guardians,

We know that families sometimes have opportunities or commitments that require children to be away from school for several days. To help our students stay connected to their learning during these times, we are offering a Self-Directed Learner (SDL) option for all K-12 students in the Coeur d’Alene School District.

Self-directed learning allows students to continue meaningful, preapproved learning  and remain in good standing during a planned absence. This option is intended for absences arranged in advance, such as family travel, competitions, or other structured learning experiences.

Regular daily attendance plays an important role not only in keeping students on track academically, but also in supporting the resources our schools rely on. In Idaho, public schools are funded based on average daily attendance, not total enrollment. This means that each full day a student is absent, our school district loses about $45 in state funding. The SDL option ensures that while students are absent, they can continue learning and that our schools receive funding for these students while they are gone.

Submitting a SDL Application:

  1. Complete the Self-Directed Learner Application for your student.

 SDL Application

  1. Submit the completed form to us at least five school days before the planned absence.

  2. School staff will review the request and confirm/deny the application. You will be notified if your application is denied or needs more

    information.

Our goal is to help keep students engaged and successful, even when they need to be away from class. If you have any questions, please contact our office.

Thank you for your partnership!

Sincerely,

Bryan Kelly
