Welcome to 7th and 8th Grade History at Lakes!

I am excited to be in my third year here at Lakes. I am teaching 7th grade World Cultures and 8th Grade U.S. History. History has always been a passion of mine. Before I was a teacher I was an archaeologist. I am thrilled to be sharing my work and studies with my students. I am a wife and a mother to a 7th-grade daughter and 4th-grade son. Finally, this year we are introducing the Lakes Newspaper we call the LMS Press. This is a student-run newspaper and I couldn't be more thrilled to be a part of this.

World Cultures

This year in World Cultures you can expect to learn about subjects such as geography and mapping, Middle Ages, Renaissance, Aztec, Maya, Inca, and Spanish exploration. This is just to name a few and only the tip of the iceberg. Students can expect to learn through hands-on applications, project-based learning, virtual tours of ancient sites, research and debates and so much more. I have a soft spot for World Cultures as the Maya were my area of focus in archaeology.

U.S. History

This year will promise to be an exciting adventure as students explore from early colonization to the reconstruction of our country after the Civil War. We will cover topics, such as the Industrial Revolution, the American Revolution, early government, and the Civil War. The students can expect a hands-on learning experience through simulations, escape rooms, virtual tours, and more. We will also take part in discussion groups we call literature circles, debates, and research-based inquiry. Finally, this year we will dive into historical thinking strategies and become investigators of the past.

LMS Press

This is my discovery class which takes place on Tuesday through Thursday during 8th period. This is a school newspaper that is run by our very own Lakes students. It will cover Lakes news, local news, world news, comics, spotlights, and so much more. Each issue we will feature a hard-hitting article that will tackle difficult issues middle school students face. Along with a biweekly print our students have also created a website sites.google.com/view/lms-press and an Instagram @lms_press. Finally, we have expanded our venture to include news broadcasts. Students find breaking world news and report on it while editing the video and creating news clips to be shared throughout the school. I could not be more proud of these kids.
