About Fernan STEM Academy

Situated on ten park-like acres, Fernan STEM Academy is an awesome place to learn! We excite and inspire learners through a rigorous curriculum, which meets the challenges of today’s society using Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) as the foundation for critical thinking, experiential learning and creative problem solving.

With this STEM focus, students explore their world daily in the STEM Brain Lab, through numerous assemblies, with integrated STEM inquiry instruction, through field trips and with virtual learning. Numerous afterschool programs engage children and families to live the STEM life! STEM nights, afterschool enrichment programs and student clubs including robotics, computer coding, movie making, geography and gardening round out the STEM experience.

In 2018 we completed the “Playground for All Project", a student-led movement to create a playground accessible for all Fernan’s Life-Skills program children with special needs. This project embodied the spirit of our school mission at the time: “Fernan STEM Academy, as a purposeful community, is dedicated to educating all students to their maximum potential while emphasizing social responsibility in a positive climate.” We are grateful for the tremendous community support we received for this project.

Nighttime Residency Notification

In order to make certain all our students receive appropriate educational supports, Coeur d’Alene School District 271 conducts a mid-year residency verification. Residency is defined as where your family sleeps at night. Has your residency changed since September 4, 2019? If yes AND if any of the following statements are true for your family, please contact your school counselor or the Coeur d’Alene School District McKinney-Vento Liaison, Paula Lyon , 208.664.8241 x10062 or Email Paula Lyon for more information about educational services that may be available to your student(s) and family.

• We are doubled up with friends, grandparents, or other family due to economic conditions.

• We are living in a motel/hotel because other housing is unattainable.

• We are living in a domestic violence shelter.

• We are living in transitional housing.

• We are sleeping in public places or abandoned buildings.

• We are living in a car, trailer or campground.

• We are living in a home for pregnant or unwed mothers without another place in which to live.

• I am a student not in the physical custody of my parents or guardian.

We Believe:

Poverty disappears when a child walks through the doors of our school.

Poverty is not an excuse for failure.

If you have a problem address directly, attempt to offer solutions.

Every child can learn and meet state benchmarks.

Once we teach our building expectations, every child has the ability to follow them.

Grit and hard work are more important for a child’s success than DNA or intelligence.

Discipline is more effective than punishment.

A child will struggle to learn if he or she has not developed a positive relationship with the educators in our building.

Bullying will not happen at Fernan.
