Illness Guidelines
Public health experts recommend preventing the spread of respiratory viruses by staying up-to-date on routine vaccinations, practicing good hygiene (covering coughs and sneezes, washing or sanitizing hands often), cleaning frequently touched surfaces, and improving indoor air quality by bringing in fresh air, using air purifiers, or spending time outdoors when possible.
Not all respiratory viruses cause a fever, so watch for other symptoms like cough, sore throat, congestion, or muscle aches. Flu, RSV, and COVID-19 can look very similar. Check a symptom chart or the AAP’s parenting website to help tell the difference. Some illnesses can be treated with antiviral medicine, but it works best when started early—usually within the first 2–3 days of symptoms.
District Illness Guidelines: If your child has had a fever (temperature above 100.4°F), vomiting, or diarrhea in the past 24 hours, they should not attend school. Keep them home until they have been symptom-free, without fever-reducing medication, for at least 24 hours. If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s health, please call your school nurse.
