Dalton Elementary’s staff lounge was stuck in a 1980s time warp complete with funky colors, hospital style lighting and an ancient refrigerator that didn’t work.
The remodeling project was on a “to do” list. However, limited funds and other priorities meant educators would have to do without.
That was until the CDA Church of the Nazarene answered some prayers.
It’s surreal to have this project done,” said Debra Albrecht, Office Manager for Dalton Elementary School. “I have been praying for four years. We needed a place we could gather. It needed to be a place that matched what was already inside of hearts. We wanted a place that felt like home.”
CDA Church of the Nazarene donated $4,000 to the project. Church members volunteered an estimated 250 hours to transform the staff lounge over the summer.
“We’ve been partnering with Dalton for a little bit and I reached out to see what they needed,” says Youth Pastor Austin Petellin. “Our congregation gave above and beyond. We’ve committed to working with our community and meeting needs. It’s a huge part of our faith. It’s a huge part of the wisdom of the scriptures and the example of Christ.”
Upgrades to the staff lounge include a new refrigerator, a fireplace, soft lighting and new furniture.
“When the church reached out to us, I felt it was an open door,” said Albrecht. “When we met with them, here’s the “Have to” list and here’s our pie in the sky list. They came in over and above with everything. I am incredibly grateful.”
Rahshel Desjarlais, a paraprofessional on the reading team, painted elements of the lounge. Her giant mural covers a 28-foot wall that is a timeless testament to the natural beauty of the area.
“It was dark purple, making the space feel small and dark,” said Desjarlais. “I didn’t have to look very far for inspiration. The mural was inspired by the mountains and trees of Canfield Mountain and my hope was to highlight that. It’s been so rewarding to see how much everyone loves it.”
