Excitement filled the air at Lakes Middle School and Skyway Elementary School long after students had gone home for the day.
Teachers and administrators celebrated two incredible gifts from community leaders to make schools better.
Lakes Middle School was awarded $25,000 from the Charles and Susan Nipp Family grant through the EXCEL Foundation last Friday. The money will be used to make improvements to the school, including landscaping the courtyard.
Skyway Elementary received a $25,000 grant from the Coeur d’Alene Rotary Club through the EXCEL Foundation. The funds will be used for improvements to the playground area. The new playground will have a meditation area, a friendship circle to work on problem—solving skills, and a big map of the United States.
Ryan Johnson of the EXCEL Foundation said the funding will allow the schools to develop underutilized areas and build up school pride.
“We saw the passion behind the presentation and its multidisciplinary approach and who it impacts,” said Johnson. “We’re delighted to award these dollars. It will significantly grant access to all of the students at Lakes Middle School.”
Skyway Principal Lesley Runyon celebrated when the announcement was made.
“I remember that as a child on my playground, the map of the United States helped me learn where things are in America,” said Runyon.
Katie Morrisroe of the EXCEL said the community supports public education, and it is joyful to help schools improve the learning environment.
“A lot of playground equipment is not accessible, so a big part of this project is making sure it is for all kids,” said Morrisroe.
