Canfield’s counselors, Mrs. Hook, Mrs. Reynolds, and Mrs. Sales are available to assist students, parents/guardians, and school staff in a variety of ways. The counselors’ doors are always open. You may reach the counselors by phone or email, but email is often the quickest way to receive a response.
Students in every grade will be assigned a counselor by the first letter of their last name. Grades 6, 7, 8, A-G: Mrs. Hook; Grades 6, 7, 8, H-O: Mrs. Reynolds; Grades 6, 7, 8, P-Z: Mrs. Sales.
Here is a sampling of the counselors' activities on a typical day:
Assisting with personal issues individually and in groups: grief/loss of a loved one, parent-child conflict, friendship conflict, student-teacher conflict, depression, anger, self-injurious behaviors, and divorce.
Making referrals to community resources: private counseling, Kootenai Behavioral Health, Child Protective Services, domestic violence assistance, and law enforcement.
Support in academic areas: scheduling classes for individual needs, transitioning students to alternative programs, parent-teacher conferences, registration of new students, conferencing with students who are failing, and attendance concerns.
Teaching 6th Grade Exploratory as a way to be introduced to each of our 6th grade students. Topics covered include Bullying Prevention and Substance Abuse Prevention.
Tips for Success at Canfield:
Provide a quiet place for homework.
Set aside a designated homework time.
Make time for a nightly conversation about your student's day. Ask about academics, friends, and other topics related to academic and social success.
Encourage your student to maintain a neat, organized 3-ring binder for each subject area, or one large binder with tab dividers.
Make sure your child is at school and on time daily.
Encourage your student to seek extra help when needed.
Review all progress reports (via Skyward) and report cards with student.

Utilizing evidence-based practices and curricula, Canfield's school counselors support students individually, in small groups, and through whole group classroom instruction. The school counselors empower all students to discover their full potential by pursuing academic rigor, goal setting for college and career readiness, and social-emotional awareness in their pursuits to become well-rounded, contributing members of society.
