Principal's Message

  • Nick Lilyquist

February marks the beginning of the second semester. The new semester begins on February 1. What an “interesting” first semester that we had. We started the year in blended learning, tried 5 days, tried 4 days, and back to blended. We are very excited to have our students coming back in person on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday for the second semester. For Wednesdays, staff will provide around 30 minutes of work per class for students to complete while at home. Teachers will either send home work with students on Tuesday or post an assignment in Schoology. So, please know students are expected to work remotely on Wednesdays. Staff will continue to keep student classwork in Schoology for students that are absent and/or quarantined.

We will be analyzing grades at both the teacher and student levels for strengths and areas to improve. To celebrate the accomplishments of our students, we will be holding an “in classroom” academic recognition assembly (Pay’s to get A’s) on Friday, February 26. We are still unable to hold large assemblies in the gymnasium. Unfortunately, we can’t have parents attend. However, we will be sending home GPA Certificates and prizes with students. Thanks to our PTO for providing prize funds.

February is the month where our front office staff starts initial preparations for 5th grade tours, parent nights, and elementary visits. We also start planning dates for our 8th graders to begin registration for high school. Dates and times will come out via Skyward and newsletters as they are finalized. In the past, open enrollment applications opened on February 1. Revised dates are being worked on, and Scott Maben should be sending out the information to families in the coming weeks.

The next couple of months are a prime instructional stretch. During this time, many standards will be covered before ISATS begin in April. As always, thanks for your continued support of Canfield Middle School.  It is nice to work in a place with such amazing students, parents and staff.  If you should ever have any comments or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
