  • Welcome to your 3rd grade year at Winton Elementary School!

3rd grade is a big transition year as you go from being in the “lower grades” to now being in the “upper grades”.  Here is a list of what to expect as you grow throughout the year.

Reading:  You will read many great books this year and begin to find book series, authors, and genres that you prefer.  I like biographies, cookbooks, and historical fiction. The goal is for you to be reading at or above grade level by the end of 3rd grade.

Writing:  We will do a lot of writing in 3rd grade and will learn to make our writing more interesting and complex.  We will write about real life and fictional stories, opinion pieces, and begin to research. You’ll learn how to write in cursive and to improve your keyboarding skills.

Math:  We will dive into multiplication and division while also strengthening your addition and subtraction skills.  You will solve more complex math problems and learn to explain your mathematical thinking to others. We will also work with fractions, measurement, data, graphs, place value, and geometry.  Math is my favorite subject and it just might become yours!

Science: In third grade we study motion and matter, water and climate, and structures of life.  That sounds pretty complicated but science will be full of hands on experiments that help us understand how the world works and come up with scientific ideas of our own!

Social Studies: We will study about community and heritage.  There will be a lot of great class discussions in social studies.

You will also enjoy weekly art, music, PE, technology, and library visits.  Art, music, PE, and technology will often be integrated into other subject areas we are learning about.  We also have a large classroom library for book selections throughout the week.

I love coming to school each day and look forward to taking this 3rd grade journey with you!
