Mrs. Charney

Welcome to Winton Elementary! We are happy you are a part of our family. ♥

I am very excited to be teaching 5th grade this year and helping your student prepare for 6th grade!

Reading using Lucy Culkins reading program and the comprehension reading stategies will help prepare your student to read with deeper understanding in fiction books. We will learn and practice the essential life skill of research in non-fiction books. We will discuss and share our great thinking in reading groups, class discussions and through writing about our reading. Our Lucy Culkins writing program helps 5th grade writers express their feelings and share their story. We will learn to express our thinking as we write a fictional narrative, an opinion paper and an expository piece. When sharing writing, your student will feel heard and empowered. Our Iready math program helps mathematicians learn many strategies to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems. They will also gain more knowledge of place value by studying decimals and fractions. We will be studying US history. In science we will be studying earth and sun, living systems and mixtures and solutions.

I believe in the Responsive classroom approach to create a caring community.  Social and academic learning are integrated throughout the day. Students are nurtured to become strong and ethical thinkers. We take care of ourselves, each other and our classroom.

To introduce myself: I will always be grateful for being a teacher at Winton Elementary. The small school with a BIG heart. I have had the privilege of teaching Kindergarten, 2nd grade, third grade and fourth grade. I love learning and especially love my relationships with teachers, students and parents.

I received my degree from Brigham Young University in Utah. For the last 20+ years my husband and I have been blessed to raise our family in this beautiful area. Most of our 7 children are grown, attending college and starting their own families. I am a proud grandmother of two special grandsons. We are anxiously awaiting the birth of another grandson in September! As a family we enjoy hiking, camping and swimming in our lakes.

Fondly,

Mrs. Charney
