Mrs. Charney

Welcome to Winton Elementary! We are happy you are a part of our family. ♥

I am very excited to be teaching 5th grade and helping your students prepare for 6th grade!

Fifth graders will be reading to learn! We will concentrate on several skills to develop our comprehension: know and apply grade level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words, vocabulary, and discussing grade level text with purpose and understanding using our comprehension reading skills. Our writing program helps us respond to our reading leading to deeper comprehension.  We will express our thinking as we write a fictional narrative, an opinion piece and an expository piece. Our Iready math program helps mathematicians learn many strategies to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems. They will also gain more knowledge of place value by studying decimals and fractions. We will be studying US history. We will be reading and writing about many interesting and controversial historical topics. In science we will be studying earth and sun, living systems and mixtures and solutions. Fifth graders need to learn about the world around them to become better informed citizens.

I believe in the Responsive classroom approach to creating a caring community.  Social and academic learning are integrated throughout the day. Students are nurtured to become strong and ethical thinkers. We take care of ourselves, each other, and our classroom.

To introduce myself: I will always be grateful for being a teacher at Winton Elementary. A small school with a BIG heart. I have had the privilege of teaching Kindergarten, 2nd grade, third grade and fourth grade. I love learning and especially love my relationships with students, parents, and teachers.

I received my degree from Brigham Young University in Utah. For the last 20+ years my husband and I have been blessed to raise our family in this beautiful area. Most of our 7 children are grown, attending college and starting their own families. I am a proud grandmother of three special grandsons. As a family we enjoy hiking, camping and swimming in our lakes.

Fondly,

Mrs. Charney
