    Mrs. Joan Atkins

Hello Hayden Meadows Families!  My name is Joan Atkins and I am so happy to be your new school counselor.

I am committed to both education and counseling.  As an undergraduate I majored in Elementary Education and went on to teach for 6 years in Boise, Idaho. During this time I pursued a Masters in Counseling from Boise State University. I completed the requirements for state licensure and am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Idaho. Over the next 3 years I worked as a school counselor, refining my skills before relocating to beautiful Coeur d’Alene!

My role at Hayden Meadows is to support the educational, emotional, behavioral and social growth of each student. I offer a variety of services to benefit the needs of each student which include individual and group counseling, classroom guidance lessons, crisis intervention, family support, consultation, collaboration, and resource referrals.

I will strive to connect with all students during recess, lunch or before/after school. However, your student may work with me for further support if they self-refer or are referred by a parent, teacher, principal or outside agency. For students who need additional help with an issue such as changing families, conflict resolution, social skills or friendship I will offer support groups. Groups are an effective way for students to find commonality, express emotions, and practice skills with each other.

In addition, my classroom guidance lessons will address emotions, skills for learning and how to have positive interactions with one another. Through these lessons, I will teach positive coping and communication skills while discouraging bullying and hurtful behavior. My focus will be on helping children develop personal responsibility, self-control and good decision making skills.

Please feel free to get in touch with me if you have any questions or if there is something that I can do to better support your student's learning this year.
