Welcome to Third Grade!
My name is Lisa Vickers, and I am excited to be your third grade teacher. This year will truly be an adventure for all of us as we learn and grow together! You can expect to go on many expedition and work on meaningful projects. In addition to that, you will learn cursive, thinking strategies, problem-solving, multiplication and much, much more! We are going to have an amazing year together!
This year is my second year teaching third grade, before that I worked in special education for about 8 years. I earned my bachelor's degree at the University of Oregon (GO DUCKS) and am currently working in getting my masters of Education in curriculum and instruction.
I grew up in Portland, OR before moving to Eugene, OR for college and once I graduated I moved to San Diego, CA where I lived for 5 years. In San Diego I met my new husband Ben, we just got married on the 17th, and once he got out of the Navy we moved here to Coeur d’Alene where we have lived for 2 years. When I am not spending time with my students I enjoy playing with my english bulldog Jax, hiking, working on our new home we bought and spending time with my husband.
Info for Parents
As partners in your child's education, I believe that communication is key. I like to use a free tool called Remind. This is a way for you to contact me quickly through text message and for me to send out information about what is happening in our classroom. I have attached direction on how to sign up.
Another free tool I will start using this year is See Saw. This is an online portfolio where students can post pictures or videos of their work, and you can view it and make comments from home. It’s a great way for you to be involved in what we are doing in class. Once students have signed up in class, I will send home instructions for you to sign up as well.
About our class:
We will start each day with a morning meeting. Morning meetings build a positive classroom culture by:
- Setting a tone of respectful and engaged learning in a climate of trust
- Building and enhancing connections among students and between students and teachers
- Merging academic, social and emotional learning
- Motivating students by addressing the human need to feel a sense of significance and belonging, and to have fun!
Our first project will be around building a positive and successful classroom culture through getting to know each other. Students will collect artifact about themselves as individuals as well as conduct surveys and display information about the class as a whole.
I love to have parents help in the classroom! I usually dont start untill October because it takes me a month to get to know the kid and really see what our needs are. Once I figure that out, I will send out a sign up form.
We will also need lots of help with expeditions throughout the year! I will sent out invites through Remind!
Students are welcome to bring a healthy snack for our morning or afternoon break. We have lunch at 11:35, so kids might be hungry before that.
I love to celebrate birthdays! Please either send me a message on Remind or through email if you would like to bring something in!
I will not be assigning homework this year, however, students will be expected to read nightly. They can choose how long, but the more they read, the better reader they become. I will also ask students to practice math facts once we get there. If there is unfinished work that is necessary to be done, that will get sent home as well but more often than not that students will have enough time to complete all work in class. If you would like a packet for your student, please let me know. Otherwise enjoy the time together!
I will email a newsletter each month. It will be filled with information as well as pictures of what we are doing in class. If you need a printed copy, please let me know, and I will make a copy for you. I will also put a link to the newsletter and important dates on that calendar on my school website.
Let the adventures begin!
