Exploring Sources of Strength
The Sources of Strength program, which began as a secondary level curriculum, was adapted for the elementary level and was implemented in two 5th grade classrooms and in one 4th/5th combo class in the 2020-2021 school year. In the 2021-2022 school year, Atlas Elementary is expanding the program into 4th grade, with an introduction in 3rd grade. Sources of Strength Elementary is designed for 3rd-5th grade.
Sources of Strength was developed as a suicide prevention program and also incorporates social and emotional skill development and character education. Students learn about each of the 8 areas through weekly or biweekly lessons which incorporate games and interactive learning, to help them explore and name their own personal strengths and learn to how to grow in them. Students are taught about help-seeking in times of need and to reach out to family, friends, and mental health professionals.
