• Music at Atlas Elementary

Welcome to the Atlas Elementary Music program. I am Pat Houck, the music director. This year I will also be teaching music at Nexa Elementary on Monday and Wednesday. I was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin. I obtained my Bachelor's degree in Elementary Music at the Universtity of Wisconsin-Green Bay and my Master's degree in the Creative Arts through Lesley University. I started my teaching career in Wisconsin, then moved to Idaho and spent three years teaching at the Coeur d Alene Tribal School in Desmet. I then transferred to the Coeur d Alene School District, where I have been teaching music since 1990.

My major instrument is voice and my minor instrument is piano. I believe that music is very important in our student's lives. Research data shows that music is important in connecting the left and right sides of the brain. With the music connection, students increase scores in all academic subjects, especially math, and brings forth the creative potential in all young people. For this reason, continued participation in our music program's activities is strongly encouraged. My music philosophy is that all students can enjoy music. Our new district's music program, "Quaver Music" presents music concepts in a fun and enjoyable format. Along with my other music concepts presented through a concert format, the students receive a "full plate" in the smorgasbord of music knowledge.
