First Trimester

Story Map (This activity can be done any trimester) Using a Kidspiration template the students will fill in the story map with the appropriate information from a story they have read.

Subject Predicate Students work within a Kid Pix grammar template and create a subject to go with a given predicate and a predicate to go with a given subject. Students then create a picture to support their text. (This follows a lesson from the Write Away series.)

Second Trimester

Capitalization Quiz - This on-line Hot Potatoes 6 question multiple choice capitalization quiz will help prepare students for the ISAT.

Nouns and Verbs - Using a Kidpiration template that has pictures with words, students are to click and drag the nouns into the nouns supergrouper and the verbs in to the verb supergrouper. Students then “Go to the Writing” and write 1 or more sentences for each the nouns and verbs.

Sentence Types  - Working with partners, students open a template called sent_type.kia in the writing mode. They click at the end of each of the sentences and place the correct ending punctuation. Next they take turns recording their voices reading the sentences with expression.

Subject and Predicate Match - During this on-line Hot Potatoes activity, students click and drag eight predicates to match the subject of the sentence.

Doubling the Final Consonant With Verbs Enging in -ed and -ing - Students will open double final consonant.kia template. If they should double the final consonant when adding -ing or -ed to a root word, they will drag the word to the Double final consonant box. If they should not double the final consonant, they will drag the word to the Do not double final consonant box. They will then type the rule for doubling the final consonant.

Homophones - During this Hot Potatoes on-line activity, students will type the correct homophone for: to-two-too, made – maid, male – mail, and there - their - they're, within a sentence.

Spelling Quiz - This on-line Hot Potatoes 10 question multiple-choice spelling quiz will help prepare students for the ISAT.

Third Trimester 

Surperlatives  - Students open the adjective_er_est.kia template. Using the sample of big, bigger and biggest, they are to fill in the missing words for smart, fast, old, warm, and brown. Finally they write a sentence at the bottom using one of the words on the page.

Downloading Directions:  

  1. Login as your students if you do not have access to their folder when you are logged in as yourself.

  2. Right click on the file you your wish to save.

  3. Click on Save Target As... if you are using Explorer or Save Link as if your are using Netscape.

  4. Click the down arrow to the right of the Save in box and navigate to your students folders.

  5. If you would like to make a folder for these files, click on the Create New Folder button.

    1. Type a title for the folder such as _lang_arts.

    2. Press Enter to set the new title.

    3. Click on Open to open the folder.

  6. Click on Save.

Making files read only 

(Note: Kidspiration files are already read only.)

Making a file read only allow for multiple students to open the same document. When the students save their document, the Save as dialog box opens. The students must save the document with either a different name or to a different location. They cannot override your original read only document.

  1. Using My Computer or Windows Explorer, navigate to the document you just downloaded.

  2. When you have located your document, right click on it.

  3. Click on Properties.

  4. Towards the bottom of the Properties dialog box, you should see an Attributes section. Click in the box by Read-only.

  5. Do not worry about the other two boxes. They are fine the way they are.
