Uniform Policy and
Guidelines

2008-2009
Together we create a
positive environment guiding each child to learn everyday!
Guiding
Principle: Sorensen
Magnet School places a high value on school climate and student success. Our
mandatory uniform policy promotes the concepts of community, teamwork,
responsibility, pride, safety, and fosters a sense of equity in the learning
environment for all students. Individual expression and the arts are important
to us and our simple uniform dress code reflects that value.
Uniform Guidelines:
All
students are to wear clothes that meet uniform guidelines while attending
school.
Uniform shirts consist of a plain, solid-colored, long or short sleeved polo
shirt with the Sorensen logo embroidered on the left upper chest corner. Brand
names and logos must not be visible. Students can choose any colors they
desire.
Boys:
Solid navy, black, or khaki colored shorts or pants.
Girls:
Solid navy, black, or khaki colored shorts, pants, skirts, skorts, or capris.
Outer
Garments: The uniform guidelines do not prohibit students from wearing coats,
jackets, sweaters, or other appropriate outer garments as needed for weather
conditions. Long sleeve undershirts are acceptable as weather warrants.
While indoors,
the uniform logo must be on the outer garment.
Families are encouraged to discretely label uniform and outer garments with
their child’s name.
The
Administration reserves the right to determine appropriate uniform compliance in
all situations, reflecting on the spirit of our Guiding Principles.
If a
student chooses to dress inappropriately, parents will be contacted and a course
of action will be taken such as having the student change into appropriate
clothes and be reminded about the policy.
Resources:
Uniform components, that meet Uniform Guidelines, may be purchased from
any vendor.
Shirt
embroidery cost, from local vendors, will likely range from $4-$8 per item.
Please consult the logo-embroidery vendor list for available vendors.
If
your family requires assistance to acquire uniform components please see the
Hardship section.
Hardship:
Parents who indicate significant hardship in providing all or part of the
uniform should contact the school counselor or principal, 664-2822.
Hardship support will be provided on a case-by-case basis.
Implementation Suggestions:
Parental support and
partnership is an essential component to student success in all areas, including
this uniform policy.
Instead of purchasing
traditional “new school clothes,” shift spending to clothing that meets the
Uniform Guidelines.
Help your child maintain
a strong sense of self expression by purchasing colors and of shirts that excite
and interest them, as well as complementing their individual style and
personality.
Be positive with your
child and remind them how special Sorensen is when talking about school
uniforms. For example,
o
“We are one of only a few
schools that get to have uniforms!”
o
“Won’t it be nice for
children not to worry about who has the best clothes?”
o
Reinforce concepts such
as teamwork, pride, and sense of community.
