Hayden Meadows Physical Education
Have you asked your child lately what they have been learning in P.E.?
Physical Education is a developmentally appropriate educational experience designed to provide immediate as well as lifelong benefits. It is known that a physically educated person:
  • Demonstrates competency in many movement forms and proficiency in a few movement forms.
  • Exhibits a physically active lifestyle.
  • Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
  • Demonstrates responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity settings.
  • Demonstrates understanding and respect for differences among people in physical activity settings.
  • Understands that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction.
  • It is our goal that all students become physically active for a lifetime and have fun during their journey!

This week’s Parenting Solutions talks about self-concept.

As Jim says, self-concept is formed by each person themselves, not “injected” by an outside person.  That’s why I like to give kids choices and ask questions to up the odds that they’ll think for themselves and come to the general conclusion that they’re doing a pretty good job.  My favorite and most effective technique is to point out what I’ve seen them do well, then ask, “How did you do that?”  Their brains automatically start answering that question with something positive.  Remember, one of those equals one hundred “Good job's!!"  That’s because we’ve set them up to give it to themselves, thereby raising their own self-concept!

A lot has been written lately about testing and the anxiety this raises in children.  We are starting our testing next week at Hayden Meadows.  We know that any kind of anxiety lowers performance in humans.  So, we want to strike a balance between a need to do perfectly, and fear of failing.  This would be something like, “I am going to do my very best and be proud of that.”  We can support this by saying things like, “I’ll love you no matter how you do on that test!”

So, you know the drill for next few weeks; plenty of sleep, a good breakfast to get the body jump started, some relaxing playtime, and a positive attitude!  Can’t go wrong when you approach it “the best I can”!
