IB THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE

The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is the central course of the IB curriculum.  TOK offers participants the opportunity to think deeply about human knowledge and human thought.  The course will use selected readings and assignments from each of the other IBO subject disciplines.  The course will study metacognition - what we know and how we know it.

IB HISTORY OF THE AMERICAS   (11)
IB 20TH CENTURY TOPICS, HL  (12) 

This two-year course of study will integrate study of the history and cultures of Canada, Latin America and the United States principally during the latter half of the 19th century and throughout the 20th century.  Outside the Americas hemisphere, Europe will be the principal region for study and comparison. Students will be introduced to experiences common to the nations of the Americas through the study of cultural, political, social economic and international issues facing each area. These areas include race relations, struggles for independence, industrial progress, internal and international conflicts.

This two year literature and writing course is designed to develop critical reading, thinking, and writing skills. The course will focus on developing an understanding of the diverse culture and literature of the United States. The thematic focus will be on the individual and society. Through close study of the short stories, speeches, letters, and essays, students will develop a command of the language and rhetorical terms and strategies appropriate for the study of literature. The senior year will involve in-depth studies of authors and their works from four different nations:  Russia, France, the United Kingdom and the United States.  Seniors will leave this class with a broadened world view and the ability to analyze literature in detail.  Students should meet the recommended honors criteria.

This two year course is designed to develop the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills necessary to prepare students for the IB Standard Level exam.  Students will:  learn to communicate clearly and effectively in a wide range of situations, acquire and employ a wide range of vocabulary, select a register and style appropriate to the situation, express ideas with clarity and fluency, use grammar accurately to convey the appropriate message, organize thoughts in a clear, logical  and cohesive manner understand and analyze language in a wide range of written and spoken styles, demonstrate an awareness of, and sensitivity to, the cultures being studied.

 

IB BIOLOGY, SL  (11,12)

This lab science class is a pre-college biology course.  SL biology students will cover the history as well as the current nature of these globally universal subject.  SL concepts will stress building strong analytical skills necessary in all science areas.  The course will include but not be limited to: biochemistry, cells, genetics, animal systems (covered in dissection format), evolution and ecology.

IB ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS, SL  (11or12)

This lab science class will explore topical environmental problems in the world today from international and global perspectives. Neither geologic formations nor environmental issues such as pollution plumes, or tsunami waves follow politically derived boundaries.  The course will stress fundamentals of science, usually found within geology, biology and chemistry curricula. 

IB PHYSICS, SL (11,12)

Students will explore the core topics of measurement, mechanics, thermal physics, waves,  electricity and magnetism including additional optional topics; quantum physics, nuclear physics, biomedical physics, relativity, astrophysics, optics and the history of physics.  Students entering the program will be given a summer assignment, which will review basic mathematical skills and introduce concepts of analytical reasoning.

 

IB CHEMISTRY 1, SL (11)

This course gives the student the fundamentals of the atomic nature of matter and the consequences of this atomic nature.   Topics will cover the basics of chemistry, from atoms and subatomic particles to chemical reactions (qualitative and quantitatively), guiding principles of nature (thermodynamics and energy, shape and function), and common types of chemical processes in nature.  The course will then look at chemical processes applying directly to our own lives, both individually and on a global scale.

 

 

IB MATH STUDIES, SL - YR (11,12) 
(3 Credits/3 Semesters)

This course will deal mainly with linear/nonlinear functions, probability and statistics, and an introduction to differential calculus.  The purpose of Math Studies SL is to provide students at Lake City High School, who are pursuing non-Math related careers, an opportunity for mathematical growth and discovery.  There will be an emphasis on connecting students with the accomplishments of various mathematicians, their discoveries, and different methods used in other countries.

The first year topics that will be covered are functions, matrices, circular functions and trigonometry, vectors, algebra, statistics and probability, and calculus.  Emphasis will be on both understanding and application. Students will learn the international symbols, the use of the graphing calculator, and mathematical writing skills.  During the second year the history of mathematics will be used to connect the topics.

 

IB THEATRE 3 SL (11-12)
IB THEATRE 4, HL (12)

This course is intended as an advanced study in performance skills, world theatre studies, practical play analysis and theatre production.  The study of theatre provided students with an understanding of theatre as an illusion incorporating acting, make-up, stagecraft, and costuming.  The course will include the study of theatre as a process including audition, casting, rehearsal, production; critique and artistic appreciation open the door to artistic appreciation. 

 

IB MUSIC  SL  (11,12)

This course explores music theory and analysis, history, and cultural topics through academic study and research.  One year of IB Music Performance is required for IB Diploma Certificate consideration.  Please see instructor before registering for this course.
