5110 - FRENCH 1 (9,10,11,12) 2 Credits/2 Semesters
Purpose/goals: Introduction of the basic structure of the French language, speaking and listening comprehension are emphasized through classroom activities and cassettes and videodiscs that coincide with the text and workbook. Reading and writing activities are emphasized to develop all four skills. Students will also become acquainted with the French culture.
Prerequisite: Entering 9th grade students must have received a "B" or higher in their previous English class. All other students must have a "C" or better.

5120 - FRENCH 2 (10,11,12) 2 Credits/2 Semesters
Purpose/goals: Continuation of the study of the basic structures of the French language. Speaking and listening comprehension are emphasized through the use of realistic conversation, classroom activities, cassettes and videodiscs that coincide with the text and workbook. The cultural aspect is taught through the use of the text and related videodiscs.
Prerequisite: A "C" or better in previous level or permission of instructor.

5135 – IB FRENCH 3 (11,) 2 Credits/2 Semesters


5141 – IB FRENCH 4, SL (12) 2 Credits/2 Semesters

This two year Language B Standard Level course is designed to specifically provide a multitude of learning opportunities progressively throught each semester. The requirements and expectations of student mastery will increase in regards to the four learning domains: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students will: • learn to communicate clearly and effectively in a wide range of situations. • acquire and employ a wide range of vocabulary. • select a register and style appropriate to the situation. • express ideas with clarity and fluency. • use grammar accurately to convey the appropriate message. • organize thoughts in a clear, logical and cohesive manner. • understand and analyze language in a wide range of written and spoken styles • demonstrate an awareness of, and sensitivity to, the cultures being studied

5111 – IB FRENCH ab Initio 1 (11) 2 Credits/2 Semesters


5121 – IB FRENCH ab Initio 2 (12) 2 Credits/2 Semesters

These courses are for diploma candidates who have not taken a world language.

5310 - SPANISH 1 (9,10,11,12) 2 Credits/2 Semesters
Purpose/goals: Introduction of the basic structure of the Spanish language. Speaking and listening comprehension are emphasized through the use of realistic conversation in the class, as well as the regular use of recorded tapes and videodiscs. Reading and writing activities are done regularly. Students also become acquainted with Hispanic cultures.
Prerequisite: Entering 9th grade students must have received a "B" or higher in their previous English class. All other students must have a "C" or better.

5320 - SPANISH 2 (10,11,12) 2 Credits/2 Semesters
Purpose/goals: Continuation of the study of the basic structure of the Spanish language. Speaking and listening comprehension are emphasized through the use of realistic conversation in the class, presentation of authentic Spanish stories, as well as the regular use of recorded tapes and related videodiscs.
Prerequisite: A "C" or better in previous level or permission of instructor.

5330 - SPANISH 3 (10) 2 Credits/2 Semesters
This is a pre-IB course for sophomores only. Purpose/goals: Continued expansion of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills with an introduction to Hispanic literature. Reading selections are used as a basis for further oral, written and cultural study. Prerequisite: A "B" or better in freshman Spanish II. Freshman with a “C” or less should retake Spanish II.

5331 - IB SPANISH 3 (11) 2 Credits/2 Semesters


5341 - IB SPANISH 4, SL (12) 2 Credits/2 Semesters

This two year course is designed to develop the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills necessary to prepare students for the IB Standard Level exam. Students will: • learn to communicate clearly and effectively in a wide range of situations. • acquire and employ a wide range of vocabulary. • select a register and style appropriate to the situation. • express ideas with clarity and fluency. • use grammar accurately to convey the appropriate message. • organize thoughts in a clear, logical and cohesive manner. • understand and analyze language in a wide range of written and spoken styles • demonstrate an awareness of, and sensitivity to, the cultures being studied

5510 – JAPANESE 1 (9,10,11,12) 2 Credits/2 Semesters
Students will learn to communicate in basic Japanese and learn about Japanese culture. Oral communication will be stressed through listening and speaking activities. Basic reading and writing skills will be introduced.
Prerequisite: Entering 9th grade students must have received a "B" or higher in their previous English class. All other students must have a "C" or better.

5520 – JAPANESE 2 (10,11,12) 2 Credits/2 Semesters
Building on the foundation of Japanese 1, students will further learn to communicate in basic Japanese and learn about Japanese culture. Oral communication will be stressed through listening and speaking activities. Basic reading and writing skills will be further introduced.
Prerequisite: A "C" or better at previous level or permission of instructor.

5410 - LATIN 1 (9,10,11,12) 2 Credits/2 Semesters
A study of the language that is the foundation for many other languages. It will include a study of the culture of the Romans and the Greeks.

5420 - LATIN 2 (10,11,12) 2 Credits/2 Semesters
This second year language course continues to study the vocabulary, grammar and translation of the Latin language. The subjunctive mood and its constructions are explored through the literature of Cicero and Caesar. Roman culture and history are an important part of the course.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Latin 1
