Student Academic Accountability Policy
Purpose:
This policy sets forth the minimum required academic standards prior to the
student’s advancement to the next course or grade level.
This policy also promotes communication between students, parents, and school
when students are not meeting the expected level of performance.
Belief Statements:
Students must be responsible for satisfying the academic requirements
established at Lakes Middle School.
Lakes Middle School encourages a joint support, effort, and assistance for
students between parents and the school. The cooperation and communication
between parents and school are vital to the success of students and are
necessary components of this policy.
Policy:
Students will automatically advance to the next grade level when they attain a
passing grade in all core courses undertaken. Minimum passing grade is a “D.”
The core courses are Language Arts, Math, Social Studies and Science.
Students with active IEPs, or those with Section 504 plans, are responsible for
the fulfillment of their individual plan.
Procedures:
A copy of the Student Academic Accountability Policy will be included in the
student agenda and the newsletter at the beginning of each year.
A student who receives failing grades in their core classes for the first
semester, will register for summer school classes at Lakes Middle School at that
time. A student may take up to three semester courses at Lakes summer school.
If a 7th grade student receives four failing semester grades, he/she will be
allowed to take three summer school classes and complete the fourth one during
the following academic year.
If a 6th or 7th grader receives more than four failing semester F’s in their
core classes the student will be retained.
If an eighth grade student receives more that three failing grades in the core
classes, he/she will be retained or may enroll in Project CDA Middle School’s
summer program. Successful completion of this program will enable the student to
enroll at the high school.
Eighth grade students who receive one or more failing grades in the core
classes, will not be allowed to participate in the high school enrollment
process until they receive the appropriate passing grades.
Interventions:
Students who do not meet the minimum required academic standards in all classes
will become a focus of concern for both school and parental interventions.
Progress reports from every class will be issued to all students during each
quarter.
Letters will be mailed periodically to inform parents of the consequences for
failing grades and the options available for help.
Students receiving failing grades will develop an Academic Plan of Action.
Counselors will meet with students to set goals and plan a course of action.
Parents will be contacted.
It is the parent’s responsibility to assist the academic progress of their
student at home.
5. Any party may request a student/parent/teacher/counselor conference to
discuss the student’s academic progress.
6. Ongoing communication between teachers, students, and parents is strongly
encouraged.
