Schools to honor Veterans

Patriotic songs, somber flag ceremonies, slide shows and special displays are among the ways Coeur d’Alene students will honor veterans in the coming weeks.

Every school is the Coeur d’Alene district has a program planned, and many have invited area veterans to be recognized in person.
 
Skyway Elementary School’s third-graders presented a special program called “We Love America” on Nov. 5, and Atlas Elementary honored veterans and military personnel at a student assembly at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the school.
 
Ten schools will hold their programs on November 10. Woodland Middle School will have its assembly at 8 a.m. and Dalton Elementary has a flag presentation, taps and special songs scheduled at its 9:15 a.m. program.
 
Lakes Middle School has invited The VFW to post the colors at 9:30 a.m. to open a program that will include student presentations on the history of Veterans Day and the wars that U.S. military have served in, choir and band performance of patriotic music, announcement of winners of a Patriotic Pride poster contest and Lakes family and friends veterans video tribute. The assembly will conclude with student recitation of “In Flanders Fields.”
 
Third-graders at Fernan Elementary will present “A Salute to American Veterans” musical program two times that day, one at 9:30 for the school and one at 6:30 for parents and the public.
 
Bryan Elementary has an array of events to honor veterans. Students have cut out stars with the names of family members who are veterans, first graders will be singing the National Anthem over the intercom at 9 a.m., followed by an assembly at 2:30 featuring Scouts presenting the colors, video clips about veterans and a moment of silence for those who died in service to their country.
 
Sorensen assembly for veterans will be at 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 10.
 
Coeur d’Alene and Lake City high schools will have special speakers and music performed by their musical groups. At a 9:30 a.m. assembly, at CHS, Major James Phillips of the Washington Air National Guard will speak on the history of Veterans Day and the role of the National Guard. He is the CHS band director and is commander of the Air National Guard Band of the Northwest stationed at Fairchild Air Force Base. There will also be a presentation of an American flag that flew in Afghanistan.
 
Lake City High will hold its assembly at 10:30 a.m. with presentation of the colors under the direction of Sgt. Charles E. Morris, national anthem by vocal teacher Lacie Hedahl and a speech by Tom Sparks, retired major from the Marine Corps. Students will then have a question and answer period before taps is played to close the program.
 
Fifth-graders at Hayden Meadows will lead the performance at that school’s 2:15 p.m. assembly. Borah Elementary School will hold a veterans program at 7 p.m. Nov. 10, featuring third-graders and the Borah Ambassadors special chorus.
 
Ramsey will hold its annual third-grade choir concert honoring veterans on Nov. 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the school gym.
 
Winton Elementary will hold its assembly on Dec. 8, combining the Veterans Day and Pearl Harbor Day observances into one program.  
 
Canfield Middle School will use technology to present a school-wide televised program honoring veterans and talking about the significance of Veterans Day. At Project C.D.A., government teachers will be teaching students about veterans and the meaning of Veterans Day.
