The Coeur d'Alene Developmental Preschool provides a play-based learning
environment for 3-5 year olds who are experiencing developmental delays in one or more areas. Currently there are
ten half-day preschool classrooms at Fernan.
The classroom environment and activities in the preschool are designed to
accommodate children's needs through a facilitated play model in which the students learn through their
interaction with their environment, peers, and adults. Typically developing peers are
members of the classroom. Parent volunteers are also an important component of the preschool
program.
A typical preschool day includes child's choice time, circle time, center time, snack and
recess. The children also participate in art, music, P.E., library, school assemblies and
field trips. During these activities, the following skills are developed: social interaction,
communication, cognitive skills, large and small motor development, self-help skills,
pre-literacy, and problem-solving.
A variety of additional services are available to the preschoolers based on their individual
needs. Related services are offered by a number of specialists including the Physical
Therapist, Occupational Therapist Speech/Language Pathologist, Hearing Impaired Specialist,
Vision Impaired Specialist, School Psychologist, and School Counselor. The preschool also
offers a family component, which includes a "parent coffee and chat" group, parent information
nights, home visits, and community outings.
