Clark Campbell is the Physical Education teacher for both Fernan and Winton
Elementary Schools. He is at Fernan Monday through Wednesday and at Winton
Thursday and Friday.
Students of the Coeur d’Alene School District receive formal Physical Education
instruction once a week. Kindergarten and Life Skills classes are 30 minutes,
while 1st through 5th Grade classes are 45 minutes. The only exception to this
at Fernan is in regard to the Extended Day Kindergarten students who receive an
additional 30 minute PE session.
The primary students at Fernan (Kindergarten, 1st, & 2nd) participate in a
variety of lead up games and activities designed to challenge and enhance all
facets of motor skill development. The Life Skills class is much less
structured. However, students are still challenged to develop their motor skills
in a fun and safe environment. The 3rd, 4th, & 5th graders also participate in a
wide variety of games and activities to enhance their physical skills and
fitness levels. Instructional units include, but are not limited to, the
following: Soccer, Floor Hockey, Basketball, Jump Rope, Juggling, Volleyball,
and Softball.
Sportsmanship, along with consideration and respect for the feelings of others
are a primary focus in all of the PE classes. The ultimate objective for Mr.
Campbell is to instill within all students the skills, attitudes, and confidence
necessary to enjoy physical activities for a lifetime. In order for this to
happen, he knows it is crucial that children experience success and the joy of
physical activity at an early age.
Some of the instructional units for the fourth and fifth grade include:
basketball, soccer, floor hockey, volleyball, gymnastics and dance.
The physical education program also will involve community events such as the
National Hoop Shoot and Jump Rope for the Heart Association.
The ultimate objective for Mrs. Burt and Mr. Campbell is to instill within
our students the skills, attitudes, and confidence necessary to enjoy physical activities for a lifetime. I believe that in order for this
to happen, it is crucial that children experience success and joy of physical
activity at an early age. Remember, "IF YOU HAD FUN---YOU WON!"
