FERNAN'S ART GALLERY
FIFTH GRADE
Our motto: "Imagination is more important than knowledge."
~Albert Einstein

As the Art Teacher at Fernan, I have to say that the artwork this year in Fifth Grade has a fun edge and I hope that the students will continue to enjoy creating and playing with color.  See for yourself.......

Fifth Grade students created their art portfolios combining a number of concepts they have learned throughout their years in Fernan's Art Room.  They learned that Vincent VanGogh also drew many, many landscapes using various kinds of lines and patterns.  Then they chose a landscape photograph from a magazine or calendar.  They learned to draw a grid using a ruler and to use a plexi-glass grid to draw the major landscape forms onto their gridded paper.  Then they used their knowledge of patterns and created a dynamic landscape "a la VanGogh."  (What if VanGogh had had a box of colored markers?)

The Christmas card prints were made by carving into a block of soft plastic.  Yes, we used carving tools!  Each section was painted with block tempera color and the paper pressed, "burnished," to transfer the color from block to paper.  The prints were numbered and signed by the students, then Christmas cards made for family.

The final project for Fernan's Elementary Art students is a color mixing project.  Each Fifth Grade student selects a masterpiece, draws it and then, using only primary, secondary and neutral colors (no brown!), they had to do their best to match the colors of the master artist--using tempera paints.  The pieces this year are beautifully done!  Bravo!!  Can you guess who any of the famous artists are?
