From The Principal

Dear Fernan Families,

Fall is flying by, almost as fast as the summer did.  I hope you are taking time to enjoy the last few days of sunny weather and preparing for the coming winter.    Thanks for attending the Fernan Triple Play fund raiser on Friday Oct 24th is was a good time and successful by all accounts.

This Friday, we will have our Halloween festivities:  The parade will begin at 9:15 a.m. and will be followed by classroom parties that will be completed by morning recess time at 10:35.  Please remember that costumes with a violent and/or bloody theme and /or weapons will not be allowed.  Guests are always welcome to come watch the parade in the gymnasium beginning at 9:15 a.m.

Tuesday, Nov 4th, is election day and Fernan will be a polling lace with voting taking place in our gym from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Monday, Nov 10th, we will have our Veteran’s Day assembly, at 9:30 a.m.  Third grade has been working hard on their songs and will perform at this assembly along with a PowerPoint presentation in honor of our veterans.   If any of you in our Fernan families are veterans, please join us at our assembly on Nov 10th.   Please remember -- school will not be in session on Tuesday Nov 11th in honor of Veterans Day.

Enjoy your fall activities in safety and thanks for your continued support of Fernan.

Sincerely, Warren Olson

VETERAN’S DAY ASSEMBLY

Dear Fernan Families:

I am thrilled to be your third grader’s music teacher this year.  My name is Julie Powell and I’ve taught general music, choir and marimbas in the Cd’A School District for many years.  I’ve been enjoying your children in music class and look forward to meeting the Fernan families as the year goes on.

Our third graders will be featured in the Veteran’s Day Assembly this year.  Look for more information about this exciting event from their classroom teachers.

Our third graders will lead the service songs.

*Mr. Marks’ class wear red

*Ms. Critchfield’s class wear white

*Ms. Canale’s class wear blue

Please have your child dressed and ready to perform that day.  It’s a special privilege for them to lead the singing honoring these important people.

Thanks for supporting music here at our school.

Julie Powell

Primary Years Programme at Fernan

How is the Primary Years Programme different from other elementary school programs?

The Primary Years programme (PYP) provides an educational framework for teaching the Cd’A School District Curriculum. It is based upon what is currently known about how young children learn and draws upon the best practices in elementary education.

The PYP requires all teachers in the school to plan units of instruction and lessons collaboratively around six important themes.  The collaboration facilitates a carefully thought-out and sequential development of skills, knowledge, and attitudes.

Students are taught to understand that learning is about asking questions and looking for answers, which in turn generate new, and perhaps more complex questions in need of answers.  As teachers work through this programme of guided inquiry, they also help students understand what their relationship and responsibility is towards what they are learning.  In the PYP, character shares a prominent place alongside learning.

Blanket Drive for the Homeless

The Blanket drive will coincide with “Homeless Awareness Week”  November 8-16, 2008

Blankets are needed to provide warmth through the winter months.

Interesting Facts:

Kootenai county has an estimated 600 homeless people

In January of 2008, 360 homeless people were surveyed. Of those 23% were unsheltered, 77% were sheltered in a vehicle, abandoned building, stairwell or other.

Of those homeless in January, 2008  57% were males, 43% were females

Approximately 1,300 volunteers assist in providing services to the homeless

Please donate new or gently used blankets.

The blankets will be distributed through local agencies that provide services to homeless.

There will be a collection box in the foyer, November 8 -  16th.
