District 271 serves 10160 students in the city of Coeur d’Alene, the townships of Dalton Gardens, Hayden and Hayden Lake, and a portion of rural Kootenai County. District facilities include 10 elementary schools (one of which includes a preschool for children with special needs), three middle schools, two high schools, an alternative high school and a dropout retrieval school. All schools are accredited. The district has an impressive list of achievements and has been home to five of Idaho's last 12 Teachers of the Year. The District's first magnet school, Sorensen Magnet School for the Arts Humanities, opened in the fall of 2007. It's second magnet school, Lakes Magnet Middle School, opened in Fall of 2009 with an emphasis on science, health and the arts.
The district operates on a total budget of nearly $83 million, approximately $60 million of which is general fund. District 271 is one of the largest employers in the five northernmost counties of Idaho, and ranks sixth in enrollment size among Idaho’s 114 public school districts.
The district is governed by a five-member Board of Trustees whose members are elected by the public and serve without pay. The district’s Transportation Department has 62 buses and transports approximately 4,000 students daily. The District 271 Food Service serves approximately 6,500 student meals daily, offering breakfast and lunch at all schools. The Maintenance Department has won accolades for its energy conservation practices. District 271 Technology includes fiberoptic connection to all buildings and internet accessibility in all classrooms.
Area businesses and the community at large are very supportive of district teachers and programs. A foundation called EXCEL, an acronym for Extras to Create Excellence in Learning, provides between $25,000 and $40,000 annually in grants for innovative classroom projects.
