School attendance improves

Attendance in the Coeur d'Alene School District averaged 95.6 % on October 28, the highest attendance since Sept. 24.

No building was below 92.8 %, other than Bridge Academy which may not have an accurate report due to student transitions.

Our three middle schools that were hard-hit by illness are all above 95% now, and Sorensen and Winton, which also had lots of absenteeism in mid-October,  were at 95.7 % and 96.2 %, respectively, on Oct. 28.

H1N1 flu immunization clinics were completed at all elementary schools except Skyway, Sorensen, Winton and Kinder Center. Panhandle Health District is hoping to receive enough vaccine to resume clinics at those elementary schools in mid-November, and then conduct clinics at the three middle schools and the high schools in early December.

Elementary students whose parents signed consent forms will automatically be vaccinated on the new dates. Packets for middle and high schools will be sent home a week before those clinics. Parents who wish the vaccine for their child are asked to return the permission form immediately so the Health District can schedule the appropriate number of nurses and vaccine doses. There is no charge for the vaccine.

“Offering vaccination clinics at our schools is absolutely the right thing to do,” said Superintendent Hazel Bauman, “but no child will be immunized without a permission form signed by the parent or guardian.”

Parents with questions about the vaccine may call the health district.

School nurses and secretaries continue to monitor absenteeism, and the District asks parents to monitor their child’s health daily, and give as many details as possible when calling in an absence.

Common symptoms of H1N1 are the sudden start of fever with a cough and/or sore throat and body aches. Other symptoms include lack of energy and appetite, headache, fatigue, runny or stuffy nose and, in some people, vomiting and diarrhea.

If your child is home with a fever and flu-like symptoms, please do not let your child return to school until the child has been fever-free, without medication such as Tylenol or ibuprofen, for 24 hours.
