Valedictorian/Salutatorian Eligibility
| CLASS OF 2003 AND 2004 The standards for being recognized as the valedictorian and salutatorian are as follows: A. Grade point shall be determined by the average of grades earned during the seven semesters of students high school career. (Grades earned during the final semester shall not count for the purpose of this policy.) Grades shall be averaged with the following weight: A=4; B=3; C=2; D=1 and F=0. B. To be considered for valedictorian or salutatorian, students must be in college preparatory program appropriate to Idaho's colleges and universities. They must also have completed at least five credits from the following courses in their junior or senior year: Honors Chemistry, Honors U.S. History, Honors English, Honors Physics, Pre- calculus, Calculus, Spanish IV, Honors Biology II, Forestry Management, and any AP courses. The selected courses need to represent at least three of the following four areas: English, math, science and social. C. Audits in any if the above classes do not count as one of the five credits necessary for Valedictorian/Salutatorian status. Classes taken at NIC as part of the dual enrollment program do not qualify. D. Thousandths will not be counted in determining ties. E. The student with the highest average shall be determined to be valedictorian. That person shall deliver the opening address during the commencement exercises if he/she chooses. The student with the second highest average shall deliver the closing address if he/she chooses. In case of ties, the commencement speaker will be chosen from among all 4.0 candidates by a vote of the candidates, with administrative guidance F. Students who have a grade point average of 4.0 and are not declared to be valedictorian or salutatorian shall be announced as 4.0 students and shall receive their diplomas after the valedictorian and salutatorian..

CLASS OF 2005 AND BEYOND The standards for being recognized as the valedictorian and salutatorian are as follows: A. Grade points shall be determined by the average of grades earned during the first seven semesters of the students high school career. B. To be eligible for valedictorian/salutatorian, students must be in a college prep program appropriate to colleges and universities. While in grades 9-10 students must complete four semesters of honors level course work. These must represent at least two subject areas: English, social studies, biology and chemistry. In addition to the above four credits, students in grades 11-12 must also complete at least eight credits designated as Honors or Advanced Placement courses in the following subject areas: social studies, biology, chemistry, government, English, a math course above Algebra II and a fourth year of a foreign language. The selected courses need to represent at least three if the following four areas: English, math, science and social studies. C. Thousands will not be counted in determining ties. D. The student with the highest average shall be determined to be valedictorian. The student with the second highest average shall be determined to be salutatorian. E. Students who have the grade point average 4.0 and above are not declared to be valedictorian or salutatorian, and shall be announced as 4.0 students and receive their diplomas after the valedictorian and salutatorian and shall be distinguished with a special stole. F. Valedictorian/salutatorian candidates must declare their desire to audit a course prior to the first day of the class and only in the senior year. Audits received in grades 9-11 will disqualify a student from consideration as a valedictorian/salutatorian. |
