6th
grade Exploratory:
All 6th grade students are given exploratory opportunities in art,
keyboarding, PE, math problem-solving, computers, Spanish, and study skills,
band, orchestra, and choir.

7th grade
Non-Core Required Courses:
Health (semestser):
The following units are studied in this 7th grade course: mental
and emotional health, nutrition, safety and first aid, substance abuse,
and family life.
PE
(semestser): One semester of physical education is taken by all students in grade 7. Emphasis is on fitness and life skills development.

7th grade Electives:
Art: All 7th grade art electives
will expand student’s creative expression. We will explore and create
works of art as they relate to our culture, environment and interrelated
school subjects.
Drawing and Painting (semester) will explore 2D art
with a wide range of media including pencil, charcoal, and
paint. The elements of design (line, shape, form, color, value
and texture) will be emphasized. Art history will be introduced
to enhance projects.
Sculpture (year) will offer opportunities for students
to develop skills in 3D art including hand-built pottery, clay
sculpture, and plaster sculpture. Students will use acrylic
paints and glazes on their projects. Art history lessons will
accompany each topic.
Music:
Band,
orchestra, and
choir are options for students in this area. Select students, through the audition process, are allowed to participate in select choir, jazz choir, and jazz band.
Band (7 year) is designed for the beginning and
intermediate wind, brass, or percussion player. Most members are
in 7th grade and have played for a minimum of 12 months. We
explore a variety of styles with emphasis on instrument-specific
fundamentals. New players may enroll for a nine week trial
period with proof of private instruction.
Advanced Band (year) is designed for the experienced
wind, brass, or percussion player. Most members are in eighth
grade and have played for a minimum of two years. Students will
explore a variety of styles with continued emphasis on
instrument-specific fundamentals. New players may enroll for a
nine week trial period with proof of private instruction.
Jazz Band (year) meets during advisory class and is
designed for the school musician who desires an added challenge.
Trumpets, trombones, saxophones, clarinets, flutes, piano, bass,
and drums are welcome. We study improvisation, jazz standard
literature, and various other styles including Latin and rock.
Audition required.

experienced string player. Most members are in 7th or 8th grade
and have played an instrument for a minimum of two years.

Choir: The Canfield choirs sing a wide variety of
music including classical, jazz, and pop music. Students also
receive instruction on piano keyboards. Canfield choirs
participate in a number of concerts and contests. Each February
all seventh and eighth grade choir students travel to the Lionel
Hampton Jazz Festival at the University of Idaho campus in
Moscow.

Jazz Choir (year) is an auditioned group which
studies jazz and pop music. The group meets during advisory.
Interested students MUST be registered for one of the
following music classes: a choir class, band or orchestra.

TechTools:
TechTools is offered to both 7th and 8th graders. No prior
computer skills are required. During this semester-long course,
students build technical skills while working with a variety of
software programs and peripherals. Students learn how to use
common programs to assist them with their schoolwork and to
perform tasks necessary for them to succeed both in and out of
school. Students explore software such as MS® Word, Publisher,
PowerPoint, PhotoStory, MS Paint, and Adobe PhotoShop Elements.
Students practice Internet research skills, follow netiquette
and safety guidelines, learn file management techniques, and
experiment with digital media.
TechAnimation:
TechAnimation is offered to both 7th and 8th graders. No
prior computer skills are required. During this semester-long
course, students will improve their computer skills while
learning about animation. Students use Adobe PhotoShop Elements,
MS® Windows Movie Maker, MS® Paint and MS® PowerPoint and other
software programs and peripherals, such as a printer, digital
and video cameras, and scanner. Students create several short
animated videos and animated GIF objects.
Web Design and Digital Photography:
Web Design is for the more advanced computer user who has
proficient computer skills and works well with his/her
classmates. This year-long class is open to 7th and 8th graders
who meet teacher approval. Students should be responsible,
honest, and motivated to work with a variety of computer
software and hardware. Students learn about HTML code, webpage
design, and a variety of digital media. Working in teams,
students use both HTML code and WYSIWIG software, such as MS®
FrontPage, to create an informational website of academic
content. Students work with a variety of software, such as Adobe
PhotoShop Elements, Premiere Elements, PhotoStory, MovieMaker,
Audacity, Klik ‘n Play, and others, creating digital media.
Studio 42: Studio 42 provides an opportunity for
students to explore and experiment with Web 2.0 technology. No
prior computer skills are necessary. Students should work well
with others as a team. During this semester-long class, students
develop social networking skills through blogs, creating wikis,
and producing podcasts. Students use a variety of software such
as MS Word and PowerPoint, Adobe PhotoShop Elements, Adobe
Premiere, Audacity, and more. This is a fun class to work with
other classmates while learning about and using Web 2.0
technologies in a safe and appropriate manner to enhance
schoolwork.
School Assistants: Students may be selected by staff
members to help in the adult’s work environment. Those selected may
be expected to run errands on campus, assist with tutoring other
students, clerical work, assemble bulletin boards, etc. Students are
selected based on their trustworthiness, school attendance, work
ethic, and respect for adults and peers.

Spanish:
Introduction to Spanish (semester)
is a semester class that is designed to help students
explore a new language. This is an ideal class for students who
want to learn the basics of Spanish and is a great preview for
students who may want to take Spanish in high school.
Presentation and practice of functional expressions, vocabulary
and grammar structures are interwoven with cultural information.
Students may take Introduction to Spanish as a seventh grader or
eighth grader but may not take the course both years.
Weights and Fitness (semester) is for students interested
in weight training and sport-related fitness activities. Lifts
designed to build strength, speed, agility, and flexibility will be
the focus of this program. Units detailing weight room safety as
well as proper spotting and technique will be included. This course
may be taken in lieu of PE. Teacher approval required.

Consumer Science
(semester):
The focus of this course is separated into six areas - keyboarding, career pathways and the student four year plan, junior achievement, life skills, the real game, and current events and investing. The skills achieved will further students integration into real- world settings.

TV 271 (semester): TV 271 is a
closed circuit television program created and performed by Canfield
students and broadcast to the entire school each day for
approximately 8 -10 minutes. The course is open to 8th grade
students. Students are involved in all stages of the show: planning,
script-writing, reporting, speaking, recording and filming,
producing, directing, editing, and broadcasting. Students
demonstrate competencies in video editing, camera operation,
broadcasting, speaking, script-writing, and reporting.
Communications & Publishing (semester) introduces students
to basic communication skills relating to the adult world and
workplace by addressing the following concepts: understanding adult
social interactions, analyzing and practicing the process of setting
realistic and useful lifetime goals, comprehending the life-altering
responsibilities of being an adult, understanding the rights and
responsibilities of belonging to adult society, and the demands and
expectations of working in non-athletic team. The participants of
this class also produce a school newspaper which will involve
learning techniques in research, interviewing, writing, editing,
publishing, and distribution.
