The following academic programs were designed to assist Canfield Middle School students:

Geography Bee: Look for the date in the Canfield Monthly Newsletter

The Canfield Middle School Geography Bee was held January 8th. Representing their individual classrooms were Jared Raynor, Anneliese Bashaw, Matt Pereira, Dillon Roberts, Carlie Russel, Erik Silk, Kaylee Wood, Caleb Knight, Jared McEvers, and Casey Stangel. After the final rounds were completed, Anneliese Bashaw was the second place winner and Jared Raynor was the overall winner for Canfield. Jared will take a written test to see if he qualifies for the Idaho State Bee. The top winners from around the state then compete later this year. Good luck to Jared and, again, congratulations to all the contestants.

Spelling Bee: 

Spelling Competition:  Look for the date in the Canfield Monthly Newsletter.

Canfield Spelling Bee 2007 will be held January 17 at 6:30 pm. Each CMS English class conducts a spelling bee in which the top two spellers earn the honor of participating in CMS Spelling Bee.  Students from 6th, 7th, and 8th grade will be participating in the following rooms at Canfield:

8th grade contest in Room 47
7th grade contest in Room 43
6th grade contest in Room 44

Two winners from each grade level will advance to the district spelling bee, which will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2007.  Five winners (one each from 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade) from the Coeur d'Alene School District will represent the district at the regional competition held at North Idaho College. Regional Spelling Bee participants will need to provide their own transportation. Glenda Armstrong is the coordinator for the district spelling bee.

Pays to Get A's:

At the end of every quarter, students receive a ticket for every "A" on their report card. They put their names on these tickets and turn them into the office. An Awards Assembly is held at the end of each semester. Anyone who has put a ticket in the jar is eligible to win. Many different prizes are distributed to the winners, along with a grand prize at the very end of the assembly.

Advanced Learning Program:

The Advanced Learning Program provides educational opportunities to fulfill the needs of all children, including high-ability learners. At Canfield, advanced learning programs are available in math, language arts, and social studies in the 7th and 8th grade. If you feel your child is a candidate for these programs, please see your counselor. In all three grade levels, curriculum compacting and cluster grouping occur in the overall academic program.

Academic enrichment programs at Canfield include the following:  

  • Geography Bee—7th grade
  • Math Counts—7th and 8th grades
  • Spelling Bee—All grades

Academic Assistance Programs:  Homework House and Educational Talent Search

Homework House is available to all students, 7:00 a.m. to 7:50 a.m. Monday through Friday and Monday through Thursday from 2:30 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Homework House is an assisted study time in the library. Homework House is not used for disciplinary purposes. Activity  buses are regularly available after Homework House to transport students home.

Educational Talent Search (ETS) is a federally funded TRIO program serving eligible young people in grades six through twelve. This early intervention program targets "educationally talented" students who desire and have potential to go to college or post secondary education. ETS helps these students better understand their educational opportunities and options. Membership in the program is based on eligibility and participation in all activities are free. Eligibility is determined by income and/or first generation (parents do not have a bachelor's degree) status.  

The Educational Talent Search middle school program provides:

  • study skills
  • goal setting
  • career field trips
  • FREE tutoring
  • social skills
  • building self-esteem
  • career development activities
  • time management, organizational skills

Math Counts: Look for the date in the Canfield Monthly Newsletter

Math Counts is a program open to all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students.  Interested students should see Ms. Roletto or get more information from the office.
