Beyond The Classroom

Our goal is to support and guide students as they acquire academic, physical, emotional, social and moral skills enabling them to develop to their full potential. To reach this goal, Borah has teamed with many community volunteers who provide additional help for our students.

Borah Reads!
Through a volunteer reading program called Borah Reads, many community volunteers come to the school to read with students. During this reading time, the volunteers assist the student with reading strategies such as prediction, accessing prior knowledge, fluency and help with unknown words.

Thanks to Scott Hoskins of Verizon, founder of HEART (Help Educate a Reader Today), the volunteers will be able to select a new book, read it with a student and then give it to them to keep for their own library.
If you are interested in the benefits and rewards of becoming a volunteer reader you may contact  Title One teachers or James Curb at 664-5844.

Mentoring Programs
Borah has several mentoring programs for both students and staff.  We have two intern teachers this year.  They are University of Idaho students doing a year long student teaching assignment.  These students spend the year working with master teachers in both primary and intermediate grades.  We are also involved in a district mentoring program for first year teachers.  Students and staff members are paired for another mentor program.  The purpose of this program is to provide a child with an adult friend that they can talk to or come to for support or help when needed.

Bigs in Schools

Bigs in Schools is a school-mentoring component of Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Idaho, formed to put children in contact with caring mentors. Bigs in Schools mentors meet only on school grounds and for only one hour per week during the school year. The goal of Bigs in Schools is to enhance the lives of both people through the formation of a friendship based on caring and trust. A Big sister with her Little sister

Activities include just talking, eating lunch together, using the library, exploring the playground, and playing games. Interested people can contact the school office or the counselors.
