2nd Grade

We genuinely love children here at Atlas Elementary, and we treat them with dignity and respect as we empower them to achieve.

The second grade teachers at Atlas Elementary work diligently to meet the individual needs of each child in second grade, to create a safe and secure learning environment, and to encourage every child to work to their greatest potential.  We place a high priority on basic skills in second grade.  We work as a team to deliver systematic reading instruction with a focus on developing fluency, comprehension, and phonetic skills.  It is our goal to create enthusiastic readers who feel personal success. In writing, we teach both grammar and the writing process with an emphasis on understanding the attributes of good quality writing.  In math, we teach the foundational skills that build a solid understanding of mathematical concepts.  We use a variety of techniques to help children learn to perform accurate computation, tell time, utilize money, and perform measurement skills.

A word about fluency:
There are numerous components included under the umbrella of "literacy".  At this time there is a push by the state of Idaho to focus on fluency, which is the rate at which a child reads.  At school we model and practice "reading like we talk."  The average second grader is expected to reach about 100 words in a minute.  In order to achieve this standard, we need to encourage the children not to “freeze” on particular words.  There is a time to move on and get the general meaning of a passage.  You may want to casually time your child at home for a minute to see if fluency is something you can work on at home too.
